Groups rally as fires rage
New Life - Bringing You The Good News

CHRISTIAN rescue workers rushed to help as fast-moving fires swept through California.

The Salvation Army dished out more than 30,000 meals and drinks to victims through their mobile canteens.

Spokesman Doug OBrien told reporters, Our primary goal is responding to the immediate needs of the thousands of evacuees and relief workers in the area.

We expect to have many thousands of people who will need our help with long-term recovery to rebuild their homes and lives.

The Salvation Army is also providing beds, cups and personal care kits to aid teams and survivors, along with emotional and spiritual care.

The fires raged through California in October, with reports that 950,000 people had to seek refuge in shelters, hotels and at friends homes.

More than 20 fires have burned over 400,000 acres from the Mexican border to northern Los Angeles County, and inland into the San Bernardino Mountains. The relief arm of the Southern Baptist Convention was also on the grounds in southern California. Kitchen units have been set up in Newhall, Escondido and Mira Mesa.

President George Bush helped accelerate aid from the government to the fire-ravaged area by signing a major disaster declaration.

North American Mission Board chief Geoff Hammond said, Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of California as they endure this tragic fire and the devastation its caused. Please be in prayer as well for the local churches as they minister.
